Start With Dessert!

START WITH DESSERT
Build up excitement for home cooked foods by starting with dessert first! It’s important that the message is not one of deprivation. It’s the time to show that when healthy foods are chosen, 1) I’m not as hungry, 2) quantities don’t matter if I am eating natural foods and 3)sugar cravings can be conquered!

GET EXCITED!

Be your own best cheerleader! If possible, also have another family member (spouse, oldest child) be an excited advocate for the new food being presented. “Oh wow, we’re eating miniature trees tonight! This broccoli tastes delicious!” Or in reference to millet, “Hey, this is just like couscous which you guys love!” Get the idea?

TEACH THEM HOW TO SAVOR FOOD:

A special food is something to put in your mouth, let it stay there and melt and allow the tongue to really catch all the flavors and deliciousness. Teach them that if I really savor my food, one or two bites of that special sweet, that’s all I need to be satisfied! (This is a great exercise with dark chocolate, sorbet, cookie.)
